PREFACE How did I become Balu's Fan? This is not at all an attempt to showcase my efficiency as a writer. It is only my humble endeavour to project the good qualities of Balu and some interesting details of his life to the readers. My first acquaintance with Balu was somewhat strange. In my view, during those days, Ghantasala was the only playback singer in Tollywood. I used to pounce upon those who criticised his singing. It took many years for me to realize that it was due to my boundless affection for him that made me think like that. It was a wonderful music programme and the venue was beautifully decorated with colourful lights. The finals just got concluded. All the four contestants who sang with good merit were sitting on their respective seats anxiously waiting for the judgement. Balu was extensively discussing with the other judge to decide the winner. The musicians were relaxing after completion of their role. The make-up man came and wiped the drops of sweat on the face of Balu, gave light touch up and went back. The organisers of the programme and the technical staff talked to him and returned. Suddenly, there was pitch silence. Anxiety was seen on everybody's face to know the outcome. Balu was quietly sitting. Then, some influential audience approached him, talked to him, took autograph and photographs with him and went away. It was at this time, I crossed all the barriers and argued with the security guards who stopped me from meeting Balu. In those days, I was more curious than thinking quietly, Even though I did not have any proficiency, knowledge, power and status, I still demanded an appointment with the Chief Guest however much powerful and influential he might be.
